National Youth Gang Survey Analysis

Gang-Related Drug Offenses

Respondents provided information regarding gang-related drug sales in 2002 compared to 2001.

  • Across all areas types, most law enforcement agencies did not report an increase in drug sales involving gang members in 2002.
  • In general, agencies with chronic gang problems were less likely to report an increase in gang-related drug sales compared with emerging gang-problem areas.
  • These findings are compatible with a substantial body of empirical research that demonstrates extensive variation in the relationship between gangs and drugs. While the connection between gangs and drugs is clearly evident, it is most often found to be less interdependent than commonly perceived.

The bar chart is entitled “Gang-Related Drugs Sales.” Displayed horizontally are the four area types—larger cities, suburban counties, smaller cities, and rural counties—and displayed vertically are percentages from 0 to 100. The categories “Increase” and “No Increase” are presented as the data points. The heading entitled “Gang-Related Drug Offenses” includes bullet points which describe this bar chart.

Analysis for this section pertains only to law enforcement agencies reporting gang problems. Please see the Prevalence of Youth Gang Problems section.
