Statistical Data Collection and Analysis

The Center collects and analyzes gang-related data on a nationwide basis, generating annual surveys and reports. Ten (1995–2004) National Youth Gang Surveys have been completed, producing critical national-level information on a set of basic data categories. The 1996–2004 surveys were collected from a representative sample of more than 2,500 local law enforcement agencies, allowing for extrapolation of data. Successive surveys will continue to expand the number of data elements collected and provide a timely picture of America’s gang problem. The Center has also completed the 2000 Survey of Youth Gangs in Indian Country, in which 577 Indian communities were contacted.
