Sex Offender Registry Tool (SORT)

Sex Offender Registry Tool

Title I of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act (AWA)—named the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA)—includes sex offender registry system capabilities that all registration jurisdictions must implement to substantially implement SORNA.  The Sex Offender Registry Tool (SORT) is a sex offender management application provided at no cost by the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART Office) to assist states in implementing the SORNA registry system requirements.  SORT makes the registry setup and maintenance process as efficient and effective as possible.

SORT serves a dual purpose:  it functions as the state-level administrative sex offender registry system and provides local registration agencies with their own specialized public sex offender registry Web sites.  SORT provides valuable benefits for state sex offender registering agencies because it:

  • Provides a state’s local jurisdictions with access to a centralized sex offender management system, so the state’s sex offender registry information is always up to date.
  • Gives state registry personnel the ability to validate the information entered or modified before it is made available to the public.
  • Enables local jurisdictions to customize their public Web site’s design by selecting from six available templates or by creating their own template.

The Institute for Intergovernmental Research (IIR) serves as the technical assistance provider for SORT through the support of grant awards received from the SMART Office.  IIR supports SORT by informing interested states about the capabilities of SORT and by providing implementation assistance to states that adopt SORT as their statewide sex offender management application.
